Four skill-building workshops led by experts in their respective fields, geared towards teaching artists and arts administrators. Supported by a grant from the AROHA Philanthropies.

Adult Beginning Ballet 1 Workshop with Tina Anderson Wallum

Sundays, 1:00-2:30pm

This ballet technique class emphasizes alignment, placement and somatic awareness. The class consists of barre and center work that focuses on balance, classical line, connecting steps, and simple turns and jumps.

Adult Beginning Modern Workshop with Thern Anderson

Wednesdays, 7:00-8:30pm

This workshop will teach body and spacial awareness, rhythm and phrasing, ensemble dancing and injury prevention through modern dance patterns and improvisation.

Thern Anderson started dancing at the University of Minnesota and perform with Choreogram Dance Company.  She has taught to all ages and abilities in Washington, DC, Portland and Minneapolis.

Teen/Adult Jazz Workshop with Mary Ann Bradley

Mondays, 6:30-8:00pm

Session 1: January 30 – March 27 | Cost: $122

Using a vernacular style rooted in the historical forms of Jazz, this class focuses on developing musicality, spatial awareness, and personal expression. Emphasis will be on using healthy technique to increase coordination, access ease of movement, and most importantly, finding the pleasure in moving with others.

Tina Anderson Wallum’s 23-year performing career included principal and soloist work with Minnesota Dance Theatre, Ballet Minnesota, Ballet Arts Minnesota, Ballet of the Dolls, Savannah Ballet, The Contemporary Ballet Company, and Pennsylvania Ballet. She holds her BS from Radford University in Virginia. She has taught ballet classes for Ballet Arts Minnesota, Ballet Minnesota, Classical Ballet Academy, Chinese Dance Theater and is currently teaching at the University of Minnesota. Her current scholarly research is in Mind-Body Centering and somatics where she is devoted to creating a sense of embodiment in her students.

Adult Beginning Modern 2 Workshop with Kathy Mohn, October 23-December 4

Kathy’s  6-week workshop is based on two important ideas: that we all need to move, and that dance enriches our daily lives. Classes will enable participants to find beauty and possibility in simple, accessible movement. Students are invited to adapt movement to their own bodies and fitness levels, while learning to dance with insight, musicality and phrasing. Kathy will refresh basic modern dance concepts and movement vocabulary, allowing students to experience better health, flexibility, balance, and increased strength. Students enrolled in Adult Modern 2 should have some prior dance experience.
