Dance Theatre Class with Stefanie Batten Bland, September 12 and 16

Join us as visiting choreographer Stefanie Batten Bland teaches Physical Perspectives, a Dance Theatre Class, which is Company SBB’s practicing technique that fuses theatre and perpetual movement exercises into one expressive vocabulary. This approach focuses on articulation, presence, and dynamic decision making both physically and vocally. It is suitable for movers, actors and community members interested in developing different ways of being, enabling action and reaction to learnt and improvised material in the present tense.

Stefanie Batten Bland is a Choreographic Artist and Artistic Director of Company SBB.  Her practice is based in human relationships, those between people and how they fit within space and place. She builds alliances among individuals and organizations through residencies and performances. The company’s work, dance installations are interdisciplinary. They blur definitions between movement, visual art and theatre and are designed to elicit a kinesthetic response to what one sees, what one feels and what one does. Based in New York since 2011, the Company was initially founded in France while Stefanie was the head choreographer of the Paris Opéra Comique. Company SBB has performed globally, both inside and out of the dance world reaching diverse audiences through malleable performance modules for various platforms including stage, film and alternative frameworks. Commissions include TU Dance Company (2017); Second Avenue Dance Company (2017); Zenon Dance Company (2013,2015); Transitions Dance Company (2014); Ailey ll (2012) and Singapore’s Frontier Danceland (2012). Awards and fellowships include Jerome Robbins Award (2016); Bessie Schonberg Choreography Fellow at The Yard (2016); Kevin Spacey Foundation Artist’s Choice Award (2015); Alvin Ailey Foundation New Direction Choreography Fellow (2014, 2015); Joffrey Ballet Choreographer of Color (2014); and the Baryshnikov Arts Center & Jerome Robbins Foundation NEW Fellow (2010-2012). Stefanie performed for PunchDrunk, Pina Bausch, Georges Mombôye, Bill T. Jones, Compagnie Pal Frenak, Compagnie Linga, Angelin Preljocaj, Sean Curran, Julie Taymor and Lar Lubovitch among others… Currently, Stefanie is an artistic advisor for the Alvin Ailey Foundation Choreographic Lab Fellowship Program and is completing her Masters in Interdisciplinary Arts with a concentration in Performance Creation at Goddard College in Vermont.
